  • Handling the Unexpected
    Learn step-by-step instructions on how to handle unexpected driving situations, including brake failure, wet brakes, a stuck accelerator, a tire blowout, skidding and hydroplaning.
  • Working Together
    This section covers road maneuvers that affect other drivers on the road such as how to merge into traffic and why we should use our turn signals. Why we shouldn't be "that" left lane driver or tailgater and how to maintain a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you. You will learn how much time it takes to safely brake and intersection laws in Kentucky.
  • Sharing the Road
    In this section we identify the types of vehicles we encounter on the road and how to drive safely with them. We will touch on bicyclists, motorcyclists, semi-truck drivers, school bus drivers, emergency vehicles, farm equipment, horse-drawn carriages, pedestrians, and aggressive drivers.
  • Speeding
    Speeding causes 1/3 of our crashes. In this lesson we look at the reasons we choose to speed and how to slow down. You will learn why the speed is much lower in construction and school zones and neighborhoods and towns.
  • Impaired Driving
    You will learn why impaired driving is so dangerous and how your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is determined by many different factors and how quickly you can become impaired. We will also look at the costs associated with a DUI and how you can avoid getting a DUI. The lesson ends with an overview of drug impairment, including marijuana.
  • Drowsy Driving
    This lesson provides information on the seriousness of drowsy driving and when most drowsy driving crashes occur. It offers advice on how best to cope with drowsy driving and the best option if you get sleepy while driving.
  • Distracted Driving
    In this section you learn the definition of distracted driving with the most emphasis on cell phone use, why multi-tasking is a myth, and how cell phone use can affect our ability to drive safely.
  • It's Your Choice
    Driving unsafely is a choice. Driving safely is also a choice. In this section we explore what makes us mad about other drivers, while recognizing that we also might be guilty of those same habits.

4 hours sounds intimidating. I learned a lot of information that I wasn't aware of or had forgotten. I hope new drivers take this course or it becomes mandatory at some point for them to. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from this class. Well-constructed, attention grabbing and easy to understand.             C. Justus

ABOUT THE CLASS

The Kentucky Driver Safety Class is based on an online course that is certified by the Kentucky Transporation Cabinet. Students watch short videos of 5-7 minutes and can refer to full transcripts for added engagement. The class is designed for the student to take at their own pace. Each main section is followed by a short four question quiz, with a final exam at the end of the class. Once the class is complete, a Certificate of Completion can be downloaded immediately.
